A very special Easter egg that’s bigger than three giraffes standing on top of each other is sure to be a big tourist attraction in Brazil this weekend.
In various cultures and countries around the world, the art of painting and adorning eggs has become a cherished tradition, symbolizing the joy and festivity associated with Easter.
This year, the people of Pomerode in Brazil took that tradition to new heights by creating the largest decorated Easter egg ever for their annual festival.
On 18 February 2023, the Associação Visite Pomerode in Pomerode, Santa Catarina, Brazil, unveiled the record-breaking egg that measures at an impressive 16.72 m (54 ft 10 in) tall and 10.88 m (35 ft 8 in) in diameter.
Pomerode, a municipality in the state of Santa Catarina, in the south of the country, is known as the most German city in Brazil.
Most of Pomerode’s inhabitants are descendants of German immigrants and are bilingual in German and Portuguese.
Pomerode is also well known for its annual Easter festival: the “Osterfest”, one of the biggest Easter celebrations in Latin America.Advertisements
The new world’s largest decorated Easter egg has been one of the main attractions of this year’s Osterfest, which kicked off on 16 February and runs until 9 April 2023.
Sarah Casson, a Guinness World Records Official Adjudicator, was on site to confirm the record and present the certificate. Advertisements
Together with an independent civil engineer, Casson had to use a crane to reach the top of the egg so she could take accurate measurements of its height and diameter.
It’s not just the size of the egg that makes it special. The shapes and colours that decorate it were inspired by Kashubian folk art, well known for its embroidered flowers and colourful shapes.
Associação Visite Pomerode previously held this record in 2019, but lost it in 2022 when Port Aventura Entertainment, SAU, created a bigger one.
Now, the record is theirs again after creating an even bigger egg for the festive celebrations.
“It is a great joy to see Pomerode in Guinness World Records again, regaining the title of largest decorated egg, and adding visibility to our Easter festival, the “Osterfest”. Our giant egg this year honours the painting traditions of Kashubia, a region of Pomerania, where the immigrants who founded our city came from. It was a huge task to build and decorate this egg, with many people involved, but it was certainly worth it!”- Manfredo Goede, President, Associação Visite Pomerode.
The design was created by Joana Wachholz, a local artist, and an entire team was needed to assemble the egg, which was constructed using an iron structure for the interior and fiberglass panels for the exterior.
With this new record, the local tourism association of Pomerode reclaimed the record title they had previously achieved in 2019.
The record to beat was 15.98 m (52.43 ft) tall and 10.65 m (34.94 ft) in diameter.
