A Brazilian doctor delivering a baby allegedly ripped the newborn’s head off her body during childbirth – as the horrified father looked on.
The shocking incident occurred May 1 at the Hospital das Clinicas da UFMG, in the Santa Efigenia neighborhood of Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state, Newsflash reported.
Ranielly Coelho Santos, 33, the mother of a 9-year-old girl, was hospitalized on April 28 and her labor was induced shortly before the unidentified obstetrician called the father to observe the birth more closely, according to the outlet.
The doctor put pressure on her belly, tried to remove the baby’s body quickly and “ripped off the child’s head,” the devastated dad told police.
He told investigators that he even saw the baby blinking and moving her mouth, which he said was proof she was alive at the time.
The gruesome death has made headlines across Brazil after the family, from Ribeirao das Neves, a municipality on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte, filed a complaint to police.
They said a hospital social worker told them the facility would cover the burial costs – but only if they agreed to sign a waiver that “the autopsy had already been performed” and that it “would not be forwarded to the Legal Medical Institute (IML)” for further analysis.
The family’s lawyer, Jennifer Valente, said they refused to sign the document and demanded an autopsy to be performed by IML.
The result has not been made public and the police investigation is ongoing. The baby’s body was expected to be released to the family on Monday.
